Steps to help you communicate understanding to your child to help
him/her navigate negative feelings.
By Veola Vazquez

Acknowledging Feelings
Handling Negative Emotions

The key to helping your child feel understood is to acknowledge his
feelings. Follow these steps to get more in tune with your child:

Label the feeling: For younger children, the simpler label you offer
the better. Use words like mad, happy, sad and scared. For older
children, more specific words help them to pinpoint the exact
emotion: disappointed, worried and embarrassed.

State the reason for the feeling. Make your best guess as to why your
child feels as he does. For example, say, "It looks like you're mad
because Mom said you can't have dessert today."

Don't judge your child. Your child needs to know that it is okay to
express emotion. However, at times you may need to teach your child
how to express his feelings in ways that are healthy
and not hurtful to others.

      MONTHLY BIBLE VERSE

Ephesians 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the
Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother;
(which is the first commandment with promise;)
That
it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long
on the earth.
How can we live a long favourably, satisfactorily and
pleasingly life on earth?

IMPORTANCE OF PARENTAL
LOVE FOR TEENS

WORDS FROM THE BOOK, THE FIVE LOVE
LANGUAGES OF TEENAGERS
GARY CHAPMAN, BEST SELLING AUTHOR

Deep within the soul of the
teenager is the desire to feel
connected, accepted, and
nurtured by parents.  When this
happens, the teenager feels
loved.  When the teen does not
feel connected, accepted, and
nurtured, his inner emotional
tank is empty and the emptiness
will greatly affect the behavior
of the teen.
DO YOU KNOW?
KIDS MIMIC PARENTS DIETS FROM AN EARLY AGE

Parents who want their preschoolers to eat their vegetables
may need to take a hard look at their own eating habits, new
research suggests.

In a study of 120 young children who were allowed to "buy"
food from a play grocery store, researchers found that even
2-year-olds tended to mirror their parents' usual food
choices.

Children who stocked up on sweets, sugary drinks and salty
snacks generally had parents whose typical grocery list
featured such items. Similarly, children with the healthiest
shopping habits seemed to be following their parents' lead
as well.

TIPS ON HOW TO GET YOUR TEEN TO COMMUNICATE
(OPEN UP)

1. SPEND TIME WITH THEM AT THE DINNER TABLE ON A
REGULAR BASIS AT LEAST  THREE OR FOUR DAYS IN A
WEEK, EVEN IF IT'S AT A RESTAURANT.

2. FIND OUT WHAT INTEREST THEM, AND ASK THEM
QUESTIONS ABOUT IT.  MAKE IT APART OF YOUR LIFE.

3. LET THEM KNOW THEY ARE NEEDED.

4. APOLOGIZE, WHEN YOU AS THE PARENT ARE WRONG.

5. PLAN FAMILY TALKS AND FIND OUT FROM THEM WHAT
CAN YOU DO BETTER AS A PARENT.
